We’ve long understood and underestimated the health benefits of honey. A new study out of the University of Toronto confirms research suggesting raw honey contains sugars with beneficial compounds. Raw honey consumed in oral form (aka eaten) has the ability to “reduce fasting glucose, total cholesterol, LDL-C, fasting triglycerides, and ALT and increased HDL-C, IL-6, and TNF-α,” as concluded in the article published by the academics at Nutrition Reviews.
Basically, raw honey can lower bad cholesterol (LDL-C) and increase the good (HDL-C), amongst other suggested benefits, when taken regularly. In this case, about two tablespoons (40 g), used as a sweetener and therefore suggesting that replacing an added sugar with honey may have those benefits.
This new research provides even more insight and context to previous research on the health benefits of raw honey with more research needed on the exact benefits specific to floral honey.
