Supporting Pollinators and Eco-Friendly Practices

Published on March 18, 2023

A commitment, not just a trend.

At Garden Supply Company, our mission is to grow healthy, hardy plants for the Piedmont area while providing outstanding customer service. Everyday we’re implementing eco-friendly systems that contribute to the overall success of our small business and certainly to the benefit of our local community. Our efforts might go unnoticed to the average shopper and gardener. Local independent garden center Garden Supply Company owner, Keith Ramsey, reports:

“From reducing water usage, to composting plant material and recycling our nursery pots, Garden Supply Company is always striving to better the environment.”

We’re so excited we wet our plants!

A majority of the water we use everyday to care for plants outside and inside comes from our large pond and natural water source. Our gardeners are trained to water plants slowly, allowing potted plants’ soil to become fully saturated. We made improvements to our greenhouse systems in early 2022 and, to our delight, we’ve increased tropical houseplant capacity and turnover. Our greenhouse tables are specifically designed to retain water, reduce runoff and promote healthy plant growth.

When it’s time to prune our plants, we compost the old plant material along with other biodegradable waste from around our store. The composted material creates an excellent source of nutritious earth for our local community gardening projects. We recycle our plastic growing pots at our farm and up-pot plants as necessary, oftentimes using old pots.

Promoting pollinators

There’s more than one way to support pollinators.

“This year we would love for customers to join us in an effort to help pollinators by planting pollinator-friendly gardens and sponsoring a Host-a-Hive,” says Keith.

Here’s a few things you can do to promote pollinators in your landscape and gardens:

  • Grow a butterfly garden
  • Add native bee boxes
  • Plant flowering and ornamental trees and shrubs with winter and spring blooms
  • Invite feathered pollinators by hanging bird feeders with seed, suet and hummingbird nectar
  • Plant stalky perennials perfect for birds to perch and pick at seeds
  • Choose natural and organic gardening products instead of chemicals when treating weeds and pests
