Here’s a practical monthly beekeeper to-do list for Cary, North Carolina and surrounding areas.

October in the Bee Yard

 

  • Final internal inspection before winter: brood pattern, queen health, food reserves.
  • Feed heavy 2:1 syrup if stores are insufficient (goal is 40 to 60 lbs per hive).
  • Remove empty supers.
  • Replace failing queens before cold weather.
  • Combine weak colonies or add a weak colony to a strong one (pinch the queen of the weaker colony and use the newspaper combining method).
  • Install mouse guards if desired.
