The Coastal Plain area (within an approximate 75-mile radius around Wilmington) provides the sandy, low-mineral soils essential for carnivorous plant growth, according to NCPedia.org. These plants tolerate direct sunlight and boggy soil. Carnivorous plants may be cultivated all over the world but there’s few places to see them in their native habitat, including right here in our home state! The Venus Flytrap even hails as our Official State Carnivorous Plant.
Carnivorous plants consume their prey in a variety of ways. Carnivorous plants with bright colors and tall, dainty flowers, like Butterwort, easily attract unsuspecting pests. Pitcher Plants catch water and lure bugs in for a tragic sip. Flytraps close their tiny, shiny plant jaws around curious critters.
